Accra: The Central Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has deployed a total of 120 security personnel to ensure law and order during the Council of State election slated for Tuesday, February 11. At a brief inspection of the venue for the election at the Banquet Hall of the Regional Coordinating Council, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr. Kofi Adu, the Central Regional Police Commander, told the Ghana News Agency that they would ensure adequate security for all.
According to Ghana News Agency, DCOP Adu emphasised a zero-tolerance for violence, assuring that the police would enforce the law strictly to ensure a peaceful election. The deployment aims to maintain a secure environment for the voting process, which involves selecting a representative for the Central Region.
The Council of State, as outlined in Article 89(1) of the 1992 Constitution, is tasked with counseling the President in the performance of his functions. Articles 89 to 92 establish the Council's composition and responsibilities. Its members include a former Chief Justice, a former Chief of Defence Staff, and a former Inspector-General of Police, each appointed by the President in consultation with Parliament.
Additional members of the Council include the President of the National House of Chiefs, one representative from each region who will be elected, and 11 other members appointed by the President. For the Central Region, ten candidates are vying for the position to represent the region on the Council.
