Police Announce Road Closures and Traffic Diversions in Accra for State Funeral

Accra: Police to close some roads on Friday, August 15, ahead of State Funeral for helicopter crash victims. The Ghana Police service has announced the temporary closure of some roads in Accra on Friday, August 15, 2025, in connection with the State Funeral for the victims of the recent military helicopter crash at the Independence Square.

According to Ghana News Agency, the police have outlined additional traffic management measures to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow. A statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Madam Grace Ansah-Akrofi, who is also the Director of Public Affairs, indicated that selected roads will be temporarily closed and traffic diversions will be implemented. The roads to be closed include the 28th February Road from CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction, Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on Lokko Street, Castle Road from AU to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light, and Starlet 91 Road at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection.

The police have advised motorists of several traffic diversions. Traffic from La, Labone, and Osu on the 28th February Road towards Accra Central Business District and the Ministries will be diverted onto the Salem Avenue Road at the Castle Traffic Light to link with Oxford Street. Motorists from Lokko Street, Osu towards the Castle Road should use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street in Osu. Traffic from John Evans Atta Mills High Street towards Black Star Square will be diverted onto Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection towards the National Theatre Traffic Light Intersection. Lastly, traffic from AU Circle towards the Castle Road through Osu Cemetery Traffic Light will be diverted onto Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads, linking with Abdul Nasser Road in front of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).

The statement also mentioned that only vehicles with approved entry stickers will be allowed into the Black Star Square arena. Designated car parks for VVIP and VIP include Black Star Square, the forecourt of the State House, the International Conference Centre, Access Bank Car park, Osu Cemetery Car Park, Accra Sports Stadium Car park, Ministries Areas, Ministry of Food and Agriculture Car Park, Marine Drive Football Park, and Afua Sutherland Car Park.

Motorists are advised to take note of these arrangements and plan alternative routes before embarking on their journey. The general public, especially motorists, are urged to cooperate with the police and other security agencies to ensure effective traffic management and control. Security vehicles and those carrying dignitaries will be allowed through road closures only after thorough checks. Officers will be present to direct and assist motorists to appropriate car parks and roads, and towing or recovery trucks will be available to remove any abandoned, disabled, or wrongly parked vehicles around the event grounds.
