Pentecost Church Chairman Calls for Responsible Journalism

Accra: Apostle Eric Nyamekye, Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, has urged journalists to uphold wisdom and professionalism in their communication as contributors to national development. He advised media practitioners to avoid sensationalism and ensure their speech promotes national progress rather than inciting chaos.

According to Ghana News Agency, Apostle Nyamekye made the remarks during a thanksgiving service held at the Church of Pentecost, Alajo Central Assembly, in honour of the newly elected leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA). His sermon emphasised the importance of knowing what to say, when to say it, where to say it, and how to communicate effectively, citing biblical references to support his message.

The service celebrated GJA President Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, Ms. Rebecca Ekpe, Vice President, Mr. Dominic Hlordzi, General Secretary, Mr. Suleiman Mustapha, Organising Secretary, Madam Bertha Badu-Agyei, National Treasurer, and Mr. Zadok Kwame Gyesi, Public Affairs Officer. Apostle Nyamekye said journalists, as professionals in nation building, must ensure their stories and editorials reflect peace and harmony.

'We have a nation to save, and your profession is required in this nation building process. You have to weigh what you intend to say or write to determine if it's appropriate in the context, place or for the audience,' he said. 'You and your words are one. Words will reveal your intentions, and your words will chart a cause for you. A person is trapped by their own words. Be careful what you say, your own mouth will condemn you,' he added.

He cautioned against the timing of communication, stating, 'Even if it's true, there is always the best time and way to say it without causing any tension or trouble.' Referencing 1 Samuel 25:31, he noted that timely and thoughtful speech can defuse tension and prevent chaos.

He also urged the congregation to be mindful of how they convey messages, citing Ephesians 6:19 to highlight the importance of clarity and prayer in communication. 'Paul specifically requests prayer for boldness and clarity in his speech when sharing the mystery of the gospel,' he explained.

Mr. Dwumfour expressed gratitude to the Church of Pentecost for its spiritual support throughout his leadership journey. 'The Church has always been my pillar in this journey, from serving as a National Organiser to serving as President. The Church has been my support throughout this process,' he said. He pledged to fulfil his mandate and elevate the GJA's role in national development.

The event was attended by dignitaries including Mr. Kwame Asare Obeng, Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central; Dr Lawrence Tetteh, Founder and President of the Worldwide Miracle Outreach; and the Chief and elders of the Alajo Traditional Area. Mr. Dwumfour was accompanied by chiefs and elders from his hometown, his campaign team, senior journalists, and editors. The atmosphere was celebratory, with many attendees dressed in white to mark the occasion.
