Accra: Domestic airline operator, PassionAir, has announced a 10 percent reduction in airfares across all inland routes. The fare adjustment was made in response to the increasing strength of the Cedi against major trading currencies.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Minister for Transport, Mr. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, had urged domestic airlines to reduce fares following the Cedi's appreciation. He noted that this should lower service and business costs. His remarks were made on the sidelines of a stakeholder meeting convened by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in Accra to discuss issues in the sector and efforts to position Ghana as a leading aviation hub in the sub-region.
Mr. Nikpe stated that the domestic airlines, including PassionAir and Africa World, are working on fare reductions considering various factors. He expressed hope that the deliberations would soon conclude, resulting in some fare reduction for passengers.
Mr. Samuel Razak Tachie, Corporate Affairs Manager at PassionAir, confirmed the fare reduction. He stated that the company would continue to monitor market trends and position themselves accordingly. "We are committed to ensuring our valued customers benefit directly from positive market developments. As the domestic aviation landscape evolves, we remain focused on offering competitive fares that reflect these changes," he said.
Mr. Tachie also emphasized PassionAir's commitment to maintaining the safety and comfort of their passengers while prioritizing making domestic air travel more accessible and affordable for all.
PassionAir operates the largest domestic route in Ghana, flying across Accra, Takoradi, Kumasi, Tamale, Wa, and Sunyani. The recent appreciation of the Cedi, along with a drop in fuel prices, has triggered a 15 percent reduction in road transport fares as well.
