No Ghanaian Affected by Togo’s Civic Unrest, Foreign Minister Confirms

Accra: Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has assured Parliament that no Ghanaian was caught up in the recent civic unrest in Togo. He also refuted allegations by the Togolese government that Ghana was harboring protesters, describing them as 'totally false and baseless.' "Mr. Speaker, Ghana doesn't serve as a base for anybody to foment trouble in another country," he said on the Floor of Parliament.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Ablakwa made the remarks on Tuesday when he responded to an urgent question by Nana Asafo Adjei Ayeh, a New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament (MP) for Bosome Freho. The MP asked the minister about the state of Ghana's Embassy in Togo and the condition of Ghanaians living in Togo amid the recent political instability there.

Mr. Ablakwa, also a National Democratic Congress MP for North Tongu, highlighted Ghana's commitment to a foreign policy of positive neutrality. The Minister's statement comes amid tensions between Ghana and Togo, countries with a complex history dating back to pre-independence days. Despite past conflicts, both nations have been working to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance economic cooperation.

Mr. Ablakwa therefore expressed hope for a peaceful resolution to the situation in Togo and the reopening of borders. Meanwhile, Ghana's diplomatic mission in Togo is reportedly operating normally.
