NIA Registers 190,000 Persons Within First Half of 2025

Accra: The National Identification Authority (NIA) has registered over 18 million Ghanaians, including 190,775 in the first half of 2025. The NIA has also registered 210,498 foreigners, with 10,290 of them being registered in the same period.

According to Ghana News Agency, Alhaji Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, the Minister for the Interior/National Security, disclosed these figures during his Mid-Year Review Report for the Ministry of the Interior/National Security at a press conference held at the Presidency in Accra. The event, organized by the Presidency Communication Bureau under the 'The Governance Accountability Series', aims to deepen transparency and accountability in governance.

Alhaji Muntaka emphasized that the registration drive has facilitated the integration of key systems, such as the Ghana Revenue Authority, the National Health Insurance Scheme, and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), thereby enhancing financial inclusion and security. The NIA has also enhanced its security systems, improving fiscal and cyber security infrastructure, and has added premium centers across the country.

The Minister highlighted the Authority's success in clearing a backlog of 600,000 registrations across 292 operational offices. This effort has addressed public complaints, boosted trust, and enabled access to essential services like banking. Alhaji Muntaka noted the significant improvement at the NIA headquarters, where long queues are now a thing of the past due to a new system that schedules appointments via text messages.

Moreover, the NIA has piloted an online application and appointment system, aimed at establishing Premium Centres across the nation. These centers, in partnership with private individuals, will operate 24 hours a day, allowing individuals to replace or renew their Ghana Cards without disrupting their work schedules. The Prestige Registration Services, as it is called, is being implemented with partners like SSNIT, Ghana Commercial Bank, and four private companies in Greater Accra and Ashanti, offering exclusive home office enrollment and extended hours.

Alhaji Muntaka mentioned that while these services offer convenience, they do come at a premium cost for those opting for home visits.
