Kenyasi: The Newmont Ahafo South Mine is projected to produce a little over 600,000 ounces of gold in 2025. The mining company, which is currently the largest gold producer in Ghana, had previously produced in excess of 800,000 ounces of gold last year.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Alex Kofi Annin, General Manager of Newmont Ahafo South Mine, announced that since 2006, the mine has produced 9.6 million ounces of gold as of the end of last year. He emphasized that with these productions, both the government and the local communities have continued to receive their fair share. Mr. Annin highlighted that in 2024, the company paid GH?7.5 billion in taxes to the government, and in total, Newmont's operational areas in Ghana committed GH?9.7 billion to taxes in that year.
Mr. Annin reiterated Newmont's commitment to remaining responsible and adhering to all regulations within safer environments. He stated that Newmont is dedicated to ensuring responsible resource development by following the highest standards of national and internationally acceptable environmental practices. These commitments have led to the Ahafo Mine being recognized for its decarbonization efforts and mine innovation by the Ghana Chamber of Mines.
The Parliamentary Select Committee on Lands and Natural Resources recently visited the Newmont Ahafo South Mine and the Ahafo North Project, gaining first-hand knowledge of the working conditions. The visit was facilitated by the Ghana Chamber of Mines. At Ahafo North, Mr. Charles Bissue, General Manager, provided the Committee members with an inspection of the ongoing projects, which are expected to reach commercial production in the third quarter of 2025. The Ahafo North is a greenfield project that comprises seven mineralized areas with 15 potential deposits.
Alhaji Collins Dauda, Chairman of the Select Committee on Lands and Natural Resources, advised management to prioritize the development of the Ahafo North project.
