NCCE and GNA Tema Offices Forge Stronger Partnership for Civic Engagement

Accra: The Tema offices of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ghana News Agency (GNA) have discussed possible ways to partner in educating the public on national issues. The partnership was initiated by the NCCE as part of efforts to build potential collaborations and explore ways to enhance civic engagement in the country and the Tema metropolis.

According to Ghana News Agency, Ms Gifty Agyeiwaa Badu, the Tema Metro NCCE Director, recounted the existing relationship between the NCCE and the GNA, Tema Office, stating that the two have always worked together on civic education programmes. She expressed gratitude to the Agency for the many years of support, stating that GNA has given consistent coverage for the commission, amplifying its works.

Ms Badu, giving a brief on the NCCE, said the commission is an independent constitutional commission established under Articles 231 to 239 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and by an Act of Parliament, Act 452, 1993. She noted the active involvement of the GNA in the activities of the NCCE during the first half of the year, adding that they needed to forge a stronger partnership with the Agency, which is one of its major stakeholders, for the next half and the years ahead.

She shared that some of the programmes included an anti-corruption engagement for out-of-school youth supported by GIZ and the European Union, a civic education quiz for selected basic schools in the metropolis, and the formation of NCCE civic clubs in schools that were yet to have the club. Ms Badu stated that other activities are the ongoing engagements on tax education, sanitation, illegal mining, and the Commission's core events like Project Citizen and the Annual Constitution and Citizenship Week celebrations.

She mentioned that the objective of the relationship-building visits was to expand the Commission's stakeholder network, enhance working relations with major institutions, and solicit support for NCCE's works.

Mrs Laudia Sawer, Editor, Ghana News Agency-Tema Office, expressed strong support for the collaboration with the NCCE, highlighting similarities between the two organisations, noting that both aim to inform and educate the public on civic rights, responsibilities, and governmental policies. Mrs Sawer emphasised GNA's commitment to supporting NCCE's works, particularly through publicising initiatives and educating the public on civic duties.

She lauded the NCCE's efforts, especially for the inauguration of civic clubs in schools, as a vital means of reaching young people and fostering positive behaviours. Mrs Sawer stated that GNA-Tema Office's jurisdiction extends beyond the Tema Metropolis, encompassing several other districts, affirming their readiness to partner with the NCCE offices in the other districts.
