Navrongo-Bolgatanga Catholic Diocese Calls for Peace in Bawku and Walewale

Bolgatanga: The Catholic Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga has called for peace and unity in response to the rising violence in the North East and Upper East Regions of Ghana.

According to Ghana News Agency, a statement signed by Most Reverend Alfred Agyenta, Bishop of the Diocese, expressed concern over the recent escalation of violence, particularly in Bawku and surrounding areas in the Upper East Region, which has now spread into parts of the West Mamprusi in the North East Region. The statement highlighted incidents on February 28, 2025, in the Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District, resulting in property destruction and loss of life.

The statement acknowledged the presence of security forces working to maintain peace and order and commended the government's efforts to impose curfews in Bawku and Walewale. However, it expressed concern over reported instances of excessive force by security personnel. The escalating violence threatens the region's development and has heightened insecurity among residents and commuters.

The ongoing conflict has exacerbated an already challenging situation in the North East and Upper East Regions, which face issues related to chieftaincy, poverty, and underdevelopment. The statement appealed to all parties involved in the conflict to demonstrate collective commitment during this critical time to alleviate the suffering of people, particularly children, women, and the elderly.

The violence has adversely impacted social and economic activities and could potentially disrupt trade between Ghana and neighboring countries Burkina Faso and Togo. The Church, as a partner in development, recognizes the existing development gap and has supported various initiatives to ensure access to essential services. However, the statement lamented that infrastructure and social intervention gaps continue to widen due to the diversion of state resources from development to security measures.

The statement urged security agencies to uphold professionalism and treat residents with dignity and respect. It also appealed to traditional authorities to use their conflict management skills to support peace efforts and encouraged civil society and peace actors to collaborate in promoting safety and security. Emphasizing collective commitment to peace, the statement urged people of all faiths to engage in dialogue and reconciliation. It encouraged followers of Abrahamic faiths to use the spiritual benefits of Ramadan for peacebuilding and reconciliation and Catholic faithful to utilize the Lenten Season for fasting, prayer, and supporting peace efforts.

The statement concluded by praying for healing and inner peace for the victims and their families.
