National Cadet Coordinator Advocates Compulsory Cadet Training in Schools

Accra: Mr Nicholas Nii Tettey-Amarteifio, the National Cadet Coordinator General of the Ghana National Cadet Corps, has urged the government and educational authorities to consider making basic cadet training mandatory in all schools to promote discipline among students.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Amarteifio emphasized that the cadet programme is one of the most effective methods for instilling discipline, patriotism, and leadership skills in young individuals. He encouraged stakeholders to reintroduce it as a structured part of the educational system.

Mr Amarteifio made these remarks at Sogakope in the South Tongu Municipality during the start of the Leadership Training Camp for cadets from various schools nationwide. He highlighted Accra Academy as an example, where first-year students previously underwent at least six months of cadet training. This policy was instrumental in fostering punctuality, time management, and respect for authority among students.

The initiative was noted to have significantly contributed to shaping students' behaviour and sense of responsibility. Mr Amarteifio suggested that similar measures could help address the increasing concerns about indiscipline among the youth.

He stressed the importance of understanding that society is governed by discipline, despite the value of human rights and freedom of expression. He warned that failing to instil discipline in young people now could make it challenging to manage the future leaders being groomed.

Mr Amarteifio appealed to the Ministry of Education and other relevant bodies to consider integrating cadet training into the school curriculum for a designated period. Afterward, students could have the option to engage in other extracurricular activities.
