MTN Group Investigates Cybersecurity Breach Affecting Ghana Customers

Accra: MTN Group has confirmed that it is investigating a cybersecurity incident that may have compromised the personal data of approximately 5,700 customers of its Ghana operations. Despite the breach, the telecoms giant assured the public that all its platforms remain fully operational.

According to Ghana News Agency, a statement issued by MTN Ghana emphasized that it is closely monitoring its systems while working with leading cybersecurity experts to conduct a forensic investigation. The statement, signed by Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services Officer, stated that the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of its systems remained central to its operations.

MTN Ghana revealed that while at this early stage of the investigation, the full extent of the incident has not been ascertained, early indications suggest that about 5,700 customers’ data may have been affected. The company plans to contact the customers involved.

MTN urged customers to remain vigilant and adopt standard security practices, including updating mobile and banking apps, using strong and unique passwords, and enabling multifactor authentication. Customers are also advised to place a fraud alert on their credit reports with major credit bureaus as a precautionary measure.

The company assured stakeholders that it is devoting the necessary resources to resolve the matter and maintain transparency.
