MPs Demand Urgent Action to Address Alarming Road Crashes on Kumasi-Accra Highway

Kumasi: Members of Parliament (MPs) are calling for immediate government intervention to address the alarming rate of fatal crashes on the Kumasi-Accra highway, following a devastating accident that claimed the lives of 16 Saviour Church members. The MPs' demands come after a mass burial was held for the 16 victims in Obogu.

According to Ghana News Agency, the accident has raised concerns about road safety on the Kumasi-Accra highway, and the MPs are pushing for urgent action to prevent future occurrences. 'Mr. Speaker, it is our expectation that the government will take immediate action to address our concerns raised and ensure the safety of road users on the highway,' Mr. Kwaku Asante Boateng, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Asante Akim South, said on the Floor of the House on Friday.

He urged the government to act swiftly, saying, 'Mr. Speaker, I urge the government, the Minister for Roads and Highways, and the National Road Safety Authority to act swiftly and widen the deadly stretch, deploy traffic cameras, and launch public education campaigns.'

On his part, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, an Independent MP for Akim North but now with the National Democratic Congress Caucus, called on the government to expedite measures to ensure the good condition of the highway, stating, 'Mr. Speaker, I call on the Ministry for Roads and Highways to expedite and prioritize the various repair works and all relevant agencies to provide regular updates on their progress.'
