Moroccan King Appoints Zouhair Chorfi as New Energy Regulator President.

Rabat: The King of Morocco Mohammed VI has appointed Zouhair Chorfi as the President of the National Electricity Regulatory Authority (ANRE). This appointment is in accordance with the provisions of Article 49 of the Constitution and was made on the proposal of the Head of Government, with the initiative taken by the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development.

According to Ghana News Agency, the King has also issued High Guidelines to consider a comprehensive overhaul of the ANRE. This transformation aims to evolve it into a National Regulatory Authority for the entire energy sector by revising the relevant law. The expanded role of ANRE would encompass not just electricity but all components of the energy sector, including natural gas and new energies like hydrogen and its derivatives. Additionally, it would cover areas such as production, storage, transport, and distribution.

The initiative is intended to align the regulatory body with the advanced maturity level of Morocco’s energy sector
and to ensure adherence to international best practices. By broadening its scope, the ANRE is expected to play a pivotal role in the Kingdom’s energy landscape, addressing the modern challenges of energy regulation and sustainability.
