Minister Seeks Chiefs’ Support for Upper East Development

Bongo: Mr. Donatus Akamugri Atanga, the Upper East Regional Minister, has appealed to Chiefs in the area to support and guide him in fulfilling his mandate for the region's development. He highlighted the essential roles Chiefs play in nation-building, emphasizing their guidance is crucial for steering the region towards progress for its residents' benefit.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Atanga made these remarks during an interview in Bongo after officially introducing himself to the Paramount Chief, Bonaba Baba Salifu Atamale Lemyaarum. As the Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Mr. Atanga expressed concerns over ongoing conflicts in the region, particularly in Bawku, which hinder development. He stressed the importance of Chiefs as stakeholders in resolving these issues and hoped his interactions with them would foster cooperation to achieve peace.

During his visit, Bonaba Lemyaarum thanked the Minister for visiting his palace and called for the construction of a modern hospital to enhance healthcare services alongside the Bongo District Hospital. The Bonaba also addressed the issue of plastic waste, urging behavioral changes among citizens and government implementation of sustainable waste management solutions.

Before visiting Bonaba's Palace, Mr. Atanga and his entourage met with the Paramount Chiefs of the Talensi and Zuarungu Traditional Areas. At the Tongraan's Palace, Nab Nanlebegtang encouraged residents to support the Minister's work without undue interference, warning against petitions aimed at replacing Regional Ministers. He also urged Mr. Atanga to curb illegal mining to protect the environment.

Naba Caesar Afegera, represented by his elders, requested the completion of a stalled Astro turf project for recreation and reiterated appeals for proper demarcation of the traditional area to prevent boundary conflicts with the Talensi District.

Mr. Atanga's visits have so far included the Bawku, Sakoti, and Nangodi Traditional areas, with plans to visit the remaining Paramountcies in the coming days.
