Military Killings in Amansie West: Assembly Members Call for Swift Action to De-escalate Tension

Amansie west: Members of the Amansie West District Assembly have warned of potential unrest between communities in the area and Asanko Mines if urgent action is not taken to address the alleged harassment and killings occurring in the district. They claim that military personnel protecting the company are responsible for these actions.

According to Ghana News Agency, the situation has intensified following the killing of the assembly member for the Aboaboso electoral area by military officers protecting the Asanko Mines concession. The assembly member was reportedly shot and killed while attempting to mediate a confrontation between local youth and military officers. This incident, along with the death of another young man in the community, has escalated tensions, leading to the destruction of mining company equipment.

Mr. Antwi Amponsah, Presiding Member of the Assembly, presented a petition to Mr. Prince Manu Morris, the District Chief Executive (DCE), urging immediate intervention. He warned that without swift measures, the ongoing violent confrontations could further escalate. The petition called on the DCE to involve the Ashanti Regional Minister, President John Dramani Mahama, and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in seeking a resolution.

The petition also highlighted the detention of another assembly member, Mr. Patrick Boamah, who was arrested without charges. The assembly members described the situation as harassment and a violation of their rights, potentially worsening the community's insecurity.

The DCE assured the assembly members that their concerns would be communicated to higher authorities. He emphasized the assembly's commitment to protecting its members and community, restoring peace, and ensuring justice for those affected.
