Accra: The Mepe Youth Movement has issued a formal appeal to traditional authorities, government representatives, development partners, and philanthropists to back the construction of an ultra-modern market square for their community.
According to Ghana News Agency, the youth group has highlighted the pressing need for a dedicated and well-structured trading facility to replace the current Dzoxornutorkor market, which also serves as a venue for significant cultural events, including the Afenorto Festival regatta and entertainment activities.
The dual purpose of the current market has led to economic disruptions, particularly during festive periods when traders are compelled to vacate the premises. The group expressed concerns that the lack of a purpose-built market continues to undermine commercial activity in Mepe, affecting the livelihoods of many families, especially women who depend on daily trading to support their households.
The youth advocate for the establishment of a modern market complex that would provide a clean, secure, and permanent environment for trade. The proposed facility would include adequate roofing, sanitation infrastructure, storage units, and well-organized stalls to promote orderly and uninterrupted business activities throughout the year.
They are calling on key figures, including Madam Victoria Amefadzi Yawa Doe, the District Chief Executive, and the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, as well as non-government organizations and private sector partners, to assist in realizing this development vision. The group emphasizes that the project aligns with broader goals of promoting local economic empowerment, enhancing food distribution, and encouraging entrepreneurship among the youth and women.
'Our vision is centered on creating a resilient and dignified trading environment that safeguards livelihoods while complementing the town's cultural calendar,' the statement noted. It added, 'We urge all stakeholders to partner with us in making this vision a reality, as we believe that with collective support and investment, the proposed market could serve as a model for integrated development, where economic progress and cultural heritage coexist in harmony.'
