Accra: A 10-Member Police Council has been inaugurated by President John Dramani Mahama under the chairpersonship of Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. The Police Council, established by the 1992 Constitution, advises the President on matters related to internal security, including services role, budgeting, finance, administration, and promotions of police officers above the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ASP).
According to Ghana News Agency, members of the newly inaugurated Police Council include Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, the Minister for the Interior/National Security Minister, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and Dr Dominic Akrutinga Ayine, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice. The rest are Mr Daniel Owusu Nyampong, representing the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), and Commissioner of Police (COP) Nathan Kofi Boakye (retired), representing the retired Senior Police Officers Association.
Members of the Council appointed by the President, acting in consultation with the Council of State, include Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Yaako Donkor, representing the Senior Officers of the Ghana Police Service, and Chief Inspector Angel Lolo, representing Junior Officers of the Ghana Police Service. Other members appointed by the President are COP Rose Bio-Atinga (retire) and Mr Benson Tongo Baba.
President Mahama, in his address, extended his heartfelt congratulations to the newly appointed Members of the Council, especially to the Vice President. He urged the Council to work with distinction and to ensure that the welfare of the Police is addressed. Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, on behalf of the Council, thanked the President for the confidence reposed in them. She pledged to lead the Police Council with transparency, inclusivity, and a deep respect for the rule of law.
