MasterCard Foundation and GEA Distribute Piglets to Farmers in Berekum West

Berekum: Mr. Dickson Kyere-Duah, the Member of Parliament for Berekum West in the Bono Region, has launched the 'Business-in-a-Box' (BizBox) project to stimulate the piggery sector's growth in the area.

According to Ghana News Agency, the project, spearheaded by the MasterCard Foundation in collaboration with the Ghana Enterprise Agency (GEA), aims to make pig farming more appealing to the unemployed youth in the constituency.

Under the BizBox initiative, the MP handed over 76 piglets and various start-up kits to 39 farmers, predominantly women, to kickstart their economic ventures. During a brief ceremony at Jinijini, Mr. Kyere-Duah reiterated the government's dedication to promoting agribusiness and enhancing the livestock industry to foster job creation and alleviate poverty. He emphasized the significant economic opportunities in farming, urging the unemployed youth to seize these opportunities for decent employment and improved socio-economic livelihoods.

Mr. Kyere-Duah challenged the notion that farming is reserved for the impoverished and encouraged the youth to engage in farming to attract government support. Mr. Collins Asomah, the Berekum West District Chief Executive, praised the government's initiatives to develop the agri-business sector and pledged the assembly's support to assist beneficiaries in improving their economic activities.

He highlighted the district's substantial agricultural potential, noting that 76 percent of the population is involved in agriculture, and encouraged them to diversify into mushroom production and grasscutter rearing. Ms. Elizabeth Benewaa, one of the recipients, expressed gratitude to the government for the project and hoped that more farmers would have the chance to benefit from this opportunity.
