Accra: has remanded into police custody a mason for allegedly biting off the upper lips of his ex-girlfriend at Atronsu in the Western North Region of Ghana. Loris Afful, also known as Kofi Atta, 48, reportedly visited his ex-girlfriend’s room seeking reconciliation. The woman, not welcoming his advances, ordered Afful to leave, which escalated into a physical altercation resulting in Afful biting his ex-girlfriend’s upper lips.
According to Ghana News Agency, Afful has been charged with causing harm and pleaded not guilty before the court presided over by Mr. Lord Delvin Essandoh. After remanding Afful into custody, the court instructed Chief Inspector B. O. Agyemang, representing Chief Inspector Fred Amoa, to file disclosures within five days. The case is adjourned to January 22, 2025, for a Case Management Conference.
The court took into consideration the facts of the case, the safety of the victim, and the potential for interference with investigations as reasons for remanding Afful. The court assured a speedy trial. The prosecution detailed that Lucy Opoku, a 47-year-old labourer and the complainant, had been in a relationship with Afful for two years. They ended their relationship in October 2024, after which Opoku traveled to Accra, returning on December 29, 2024.
The prosecutor stated that upon learning of Opoku’s return, Afful attempted to rekindle their relationship, but she ignored his advances. Chief Inspector Amoa reported that on January 8, 2025, Opoku returned home around 9:00 pm to find her door open and Afful inside her room. Knowing where she kept her key, Afful had let himself in.
The prosecution described how Opoku asked Afful to leave, but he refused, leading to a physical struggle. During the altercation, Opoku felt a burning sensation on her upper lips and realized Afful had bitten them off. Following this, Afful left for his house. The next day, Opoku reported the incident to the police, resulting in Afful’s arrest. In his caution statement, Afful admitted to the offense.
