Man Jailed for Election Threats During December 7 Elections.

Accra: A Sowutuom Branch Organiser of the National Democratic Congress has been sentenced to four years imprisonment for threatening to kill citizens during the December 7 general election. Mohammed Ibrahim was found guilty by an Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs. Evelyn Asamoah, at the end of the trial.According to Ghana News Agency, Ibrahim faced charges of publication of false news with intent to cause fear and alarm, threat of harm, and offensive conduct to breach the peace. Despite pleading not guilty, he was sentenced to three years imprisonment for the publication of false news, four years for the threat of harm, and three years for offensive conduct. However, the sentences will run concurrently, resulting in a total of four years.The prosecution presented three witnesses to support their case, while Ibrahim also called three witnesses in his defense. The case against Ibrahim involved his identification as the leader of a revolutionary group known as 'Ka na wu,' which translates to 'speak a nd die' in Twi. On September 3, 2024, a video of Ibrahim surfaced on social media platforms including Facebook, X, and TikTok, where he accused the Ghana Police Service and government officials of plotting to recruit fake police personnel to harm citizens during the elections.In the video, Ibrahim, wearing a red military beret, made direct threats against the Minister of the Interior, Mr. Henry Quartey, and warned of violence during the elections. Following the release of the video, Ibrahim was declared wanted by the police on September 10, 2024, leading to his subsequent arrest. A search of his residence in Sowutuom resulted in the discovery of the red beret featured in the viral video.
