Majority of German Residents See Threat from Hybrid Attacks

Berlin: A clear majority of German residents believe the country is under threat from hybrid attacks, a YouGov survey found on Thursday. Some 61% of respondents rate the threat as strong or very strong, with a further 25% seeing Germany as somewhat threatened. Only 3% of the 2,000 people questioned believe there is no threat.

According to Ghana News Agency, German intelligence and defence experts have warned of a rise in hybrid attacks, originating in Russia. The term refers to various methods used to undermine a target country, combining military and civilian tactics such as cyberattacks, disinformation, and drone deployments. The survey found that supporters of Germany's Greens were most likely to believe that the country faces a threat from hybrid attacks, at 72%, while only 49% of backers of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) do so.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Thursday that a comprehensive plan to respond to hybrid attacks is to be discussed in the country's new National Security Council.
