Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron has reiterated his support for a two-state solution at the opening of an international conference on the Middle East conflict, while also warning against further Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Macron emphasized the importance of a lasting ceasefire and the stabilization of the Gaza Strip, envisioning security and peaceful coexistence through a political solution based on a Palestinian state.
According to Ghana News Agency, US President Donald Trump has proposed an ambitious path towards a comprehensive regional agreement, which was highlighted by Macron during his speech in Paris on Thursday evening. Earlier that day, Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas reached an initial agreement aimed at ending the Gaza conflict.
Macron stressed the necessity of preparatory work to establish governance in Gaza that involves the Palestinian Authority while excluding Hamas. He warned that short-term humanitarian aid would not suffice and emphasized the urgent need to support the Palestinian Authority, which is currently facing a severe financial crisis. This support is crucial for stabilizing governance, providing basic services, and maintaining security within the region.
The French president also cautioned against the acceleration of settlement construction in the West Bank, labeling it as an existential threat to the State of Palestine. He asserted that such actions are not only contrary to international law but also exacerbate tension, violence, and instability in the region.
Foreign ministers from European, Arab, and other Muslim countries gathered in Paris to discuss plans for support and reconstruction once the war concludes, reflecting the international community's commitment to achieving a sustainable resolution to the conflict.
