Lawoshime M/A Basic Appeals for Support as Pupils Cross Overflowing Lakes to School

Keta: Pupils of Lawoshime M/A Basic School in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region have appealed to the government, philanthropists, individuals, and well-wishers to assist them in accessing education. The challenging conditions require pupils and teachers to cross overflowing lakes daily to reach the school, affecting communities such as Mamime, Hagodzi, Senugbe, and Hatorgod.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Israel Mensah, the Assembly Member of the area, stated that the situation is dire, impacting six teachers, 155 boys, and 68 girls. The floodwaters pose significant challenges in accessing school facilities, adversely affecting teaching and learning.

He explained that the daily journey through the floodwaters exposes pupils and teachers to safety risks, endangering their education. The absence of protective gear like Wellington boots, life jackets, and canoes exacerbates these difficulties, making education nearly impossible under current conditions.

Mr. Mensah noted that due to these hazards, school for Kindergarten and lower primary students has been suspended to safeguard their lives. He emphasized that education is a fundamental right and should be accessible to all, regardless of circumstances, urging for support to enable safe educational access amid the flooding in Lawoshime and surrounding areas.

To mitigate these educational challenges, Mr. Mensah appealed for public support in providing necessary items such as Wellington boots, life jackets, and canoes for both teachers and pupils to prevent unforeseen dangers. He also highlighted additional challenges, including the lack of electricity, roads, water, and health centers, calling on the government and corporate organizations for assistance.

Residents of Lawoshime, Hagodzi, Mamime, Songbe, and Hatorgodo expressed frustration over the situation, noting that even the elderly and pregnant women must cross the lakes under challenging conditions.
