Labour Minister Inaugurates Governing Board of Management Development and Productivity Institute

Accra: Dr Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, the Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, has inaugurated a six-member Governing Board of the Management Development and Productivity Institute (MDPI), a subvented Agency under the Ministry. The MDPI is tasked with promoting increased productivity in both public and private organizations to contribute to the sustainable growth of the economy. It achieves this through Productivity Improvement Activities, Management Development Programmes, and dissemination of information through Research and Publications.

According to Ghana News Agency, the new MDPI Board is chaired by Mr Sesay S.A. Qadir, with other members including Professor Elijah Yendaw, Director-General MDPI, Mr Joojo Ghansah, Mr Euclid Ohene-Obeng, Madam Rhoda Gavor, and Mr Joseph Kingsley Amoah. Dr Pelpuo emphasized that the appointment of the Governing Board members comes at a crucial time when the Institute lacks a solid legal framework despite existing for over five decades. He highlighted that the current legislation, LI 1077 of 1976, is outdated and urged the board to prioritize developing and passing a new Bill to transform the Institute into a world-class entity.

Dr Pelpuo stressed the need for fundamental reforms within the MDPI to enhance its growth and operational effectiveness. He encouraged board members to improve the Institute's brand and image, envisioning an MDPI that provides capacity and development programs for government arms, the private sector, and civil society organizations. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in the board's ability to achieve significant progress through effective collaboration and partnerships.

Mr Hamidu Adakurugu, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment, instructed the Board to offer strategic direction and guidance to the Institute. He emphasized the importance of the board's expertise in shaping the Institute's programs and initiatives, anticipating successful collaboration between the board, management, and stakeholders.

Mr Sesay S.A. Qadir, Chairman of the MDPI Governing Board, expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the trust placed in them. He identified critical areas needing attention, such as the passage of a new Act by Parliament to provide a legal foundation for the Institute. He also highlighted the need to complete their office complex in Accra and secure budgetary allocations to drive the Institute's programs. Additionally, Mr Qadir pointed out the necessity of strengthening the Institute's human resource capacity and securing 150 acres of encroached land earmarked for the proposed West Africa Institute for Productivity Studies.
