Accra: Dr. Zanetor Agyemang Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle Constituency, has engaged artisans within the constituency on the government's flagship National Apprenticeship Programme. The meeting brought together various artisans, including mechanics, masons, carpenters, hairdressers, barbers, tailors, and dressmakers to interact directly with officials from the National Youth Authority, the implementing agency for the Programme.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Rawlings emphasized that the National Apprenticeship Programme was a key campaign promise of the NDC during the elections, and the engagement was the first in a series marking the beginning of a nationwide initiative. The MP highlighted the importance of the Programme as a fulfillment of their campaign promise and encouraged constituents to register. She noted that participation in the Programme required registration in the database and urged constituents to view the initiative as a nation-building effort.
The MP stressed that the Programme aimed to enhance youth capacity, improve employability, and foster economic independence, urging accountability and transparency in its implementation. Mr. Osman Abdulai Ayaiga, CEO of the National Youth Authority, stated that the Programme was designed to address unemployment and underemployment among Ghana's youthful population. He noted that many employed youth suffer from insufficient wages, and the Programme would be implemented through government-private sector partnerships.
Mr. Ayaiga explained that apprentices would receive stipends for transportation and other expenses, with insurance packages available for accidents or health emergencies. The Programme aims for inclusivity, reserving over 55 percent of slots for female youth and special provisions for persons with disabilities. Successful apprentices will receive support to establish their own businesses, including basic tools and assistance in setting up shops, with additional recommendations to the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme for further support.
The National Apprenticeship Programme will be officially launched on April 30, with registration points established at various Assemblies, offices of Members of Parliament, and National Youth Authority offices.
