Ketu South MCE Initiates Dredging of Agbozume Gutters to Tackle Flood Risks

Accra: Mr. Nicholas Kwabla Worclatsi, the Municipal Chief Executive of Ketu South Municipality in the Volta Region, has embarked on an initiative to dredge choked gutters at Agbozume for easy flow of water to prevent potential flooding. The move was also to help improve drainage systems, which are usually filled with sand debris and filth as well as to improve good environmental sanitation issues in the community and beyond.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Worclatsi, in an interview, lamented over the drainage systems in the area that were heavily choked, with the gutters filled with sand debris and filth from households and commercial activities. He noted that these debris pose a risk to houses and shops along the drains, with imminent threats of flooding. The Dzanyigome stream near the Agbozume market is one of the streams affected by this environmental issue.

The MCE explained that a proactive step to desilt the major drains in Agbozume was aimed at preventing overflowing water that could block the road, allowing it to flow freely in the drains to prevent any disaster. He mentioned that many of the gutters had been choked for over 16 years without any effort to desilt them, but he would work with all the assembly members to ensure the municipality is clean and safe for its residents.

Mr. Worclatsi also expressed plans to attract investors to the municipality to drain the lagoon and start fish farming to boost the economy. He announced the introduction of bye-laws against those who dispose of garbage in the gutters and those who refuse to participate in communal labors. Furthermore, a municipal sanitation day will be observed weekly to make Ketu South Municipality one of the cleanest in the region and the country, promoting a healthy environment for residents.

The desilting exercise is expected to have a significant impact on the community by preventing flooding, reducing the risk of waterborne diseases, and improving the overall quality of life for the residents. Mr. Worclatsi urged residents to take proactive steps and assist the assembly in addressing the flooding challenges in the area.

The initiative in Agbozume has been welcomed by residents, who anticipate positive impacts on the community. The commitments of the MCE to improve sanitation issues have been commended by the people.
