Ketu North Celebrates World Environment Day with Planting of Over 10,000 Trees

Ketu North: The Ketu North Municipal Assembly, in partnership with the Member of Parliament for the area, Mr. Eric Edem Agbana, marked World Environment Day by planting over 10,000 trees throughout the municipality, as a component of the MP's 'Green Ketu North' initiative. This effort, part of the National Tree Planting exercise, took place along the newly constructed Penyi-Ehi road and included the planting of mango, coconut, and acacia trees with the aim of promoting environmental sustainability, creating economic opportunities, and combating climate change.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Agbana highlighted the numerous benefits of tree planting during the event. He emphasized that aside from providing food and income, trees are essential in mitigating the effects of climate change. He noted that excessive tree felling, especially for charcoal production, has disrupted rainfall patterns and contributed to global warming, and described the exercise as a means of reversing this trend. The choice of mango and coconut trees was deliberate, aimed at creating future economic value through fruit harvesting.

Mr. Agbana also encouraged residents to visit the newly established Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Municipal Office to collect seedlings for planting in various locations. He reminded participants that nurturing trees after planting is crucial for their growth. Additionally, he addressed the issue of flooding in urban areas, urging residents to obtain proper building permits to ensure safe and environmentally sound construction practices.

In support of community development, Mr. Agbana donated 100 streetlights to improve visibility and security along the Dzodze-Akpatoeme stretch. Municipal Chief Executive Rev. Martin Amenaki praised the initiative, revealing that over 15,000 individuals have applied for seedlings under the Green Ketu North project. He explained that the Penyi-Ehi road was chosen to beautify the area and prevent erosion, contributing to long-term environmental conservation.

Mr. Seth Amegatsey, Acting Director of the Municipal EPA, encouraged public participation in the initiative by collecting and planting seedlings to support the green agenda. The event saw active involvement from various stakeholders, including staff of the Municipal Assembly, EPA, Forestry Commission, National Service Personnel, students from Ohawu Agricultural College and Dzodze-Penyi Senior High School, youth groups, assembly members, unit committee members, traditional authorities, and residents from across Ketu North.
