Keta Municipal Assembly to Enforce Sanitation Day Participation

Keta: The Keta Municipal Assembly in the Volta Region has issued a warning that individuals or groups who refuse to participate in the upcoming communal clean-up activities on the Municipal Sanitation Day, scheduled for Saturday, August 9, will face punitive measures.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Assembly announced that the inaugural Municipal Sanitation Day will be observed across the entire municipality, with all individuals and groups expected to clean up their immediate environments. A press statement dated August 6, 2025, signed by Mr. Innocent Komla Gavua, the Municipal Coordinating Director, stated that the clean-up exercise is set to occur from 0500 to 0800 hours in all communities within the municipality.

The statement emphasized that no business premises shall operate on the designated day until the clean-up activities are completed. Business operators, including bar keepers, chop bar operators, market traders, and shop or storekeepers, are expected to clean their respective areas. Additionally, no commercial vehicles will be allowed to operate during the specified hours, except those with permission.

Mr. Gavua highlighted that lorry park personnel must undertake the cleaning of all lorry parks, taxi ranks, and stations. Office workers, both in public and private sectors, are also required to participate in the general cleaning activities. He stated that any person or group failing to engage in the communal clean-up will be guilty of an offense and subject to a fine of not less than GH? 100 penalty units, equivalent to GH? 1200, or imprisonment for a term between six and nine months, or both.

He urged all residents, including farmers, businesses, drivers, and fisherfolks, to participate, led by traditional and religious leaders, assembly members, and others. Mr. Wisdom Seade, the Keta Municipal Chief Executive, reinforced that the Assembly will enforce by-laws to address non-participants without permission.

The Keta Municipal Assembly is relying on the cooperation of residents in various electoral areas, led by assembly members, to ensure the success of the exercise and maintain a healthy, clean environment. The GNA reported that an official launch of the Municipal clean-up exercise will take place at Anlo-Afiadenyigba, led by the Municipal Chief Executive, Municipal Coordinating Director, and Municipal Environmental officials. This national activity is expected to be observed every first Saturday of each month.
