Koforidua: The newly elected Eastern Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Stephen Ampem Darko Koranteng, has emphasized the essential democratic role of journalism, describing it as more than just a profession, but as 'a pillar of democracy.' During a swearing-in ceremony in Koforidua, Mr. Koranteng committed to forging strategic partnerships and collaborating with civil society organizations, traditional authorities, and relevant agencies to empower journalists, while ensuring their safety and welfare.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Koranteng articulated his plans to prioritize mentorship and capacity-building for young reporters, promote ethical journalism, and amplify the voice of the Eastern Region in national dialogues. He called upon his fellow journalists for support and collaboration to help build a strong and dynamic GJA in the region, one that commands dignity and respect.
Mr. Koranteng reiterated the foundational role of journalism in democracy, urging his colleagues to embrace this vital responsibility with pride and determination. "Journalism is not just a profession; it is a pillar of democracy. Let us rise to this featured responsibility with pride and purpose," he asserted.
The ceremony also marked the formal swearing-in of the newly elected Eastern Regional executives, conducted by Justice George Krofa Addae, the Supervising High Court Judge of the Koforidua High Court. The officials took the oath of office and the oath of allegiance, legally confirming their leadership roles.
Justice Addae encouraged the executives to serve with integrity and humility, emphasizing their role as effective mediators between journalists in the region and the national leadership of the GJA. "Your swearing-in signifies that your election has now become official and legal. You must commit to serving journalists and fostering coordination with the National Executives," he stated.
