Invest More in Agriculture to Strengthen Ghana Cedi – Dr Hodor Mensah

Awutu Bawjiase: Dr Samuel Hodor Mensah, an optometrist and farmer, has urged the government to focus on the agricultural sector to enhance the stability of the Ghana Cedi. Dr Mensah, who was named the 2024 Eastern Regional Best Farmer, shared his insights during an interview at Awutu Bawjiase.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Mensah highlighted the potential of agriculture to ensure food security and supply industries with raw materials, thereby creating job opportunities for the youth. As the CEO of Sahmen Glory Company, an integrated farm in Mepom, Dr Mensah emphasized the need for government support to empower local farmers and boost productivity.

He advocated for the provision of assurance packages to rural industries to stimulate development in rural areas. Sahmen Glory processes coconut into various products and offers agricultural consultancy and plantation management services. Dr Mensah called for substantial investment in agriculture, improved rural infrastructure, and modern agricultural practices to engage the youth and enhance productivity.

Dr Mensah also stressed the importance of affordable credit with low interest rates and the integration of research into agriculture. He expressed concern over land issues in the Upper West Akim District, where estate development and sand winning activities threaten farmlands. He urged the government to implement a regulatory framework to protect farmers' investments.

Furthermore, Dr Mensah proposed the creation of a centralized data system for commodities to facilitate market access and improve farmers' living standards. He stressed the necessity of Agric Directors providing information on local commodities to ensure market availability, thereby benefiting farmers, consumers, and the government through enhanced revenue.
