Accra: An interdenominational Christian service was held at the forecourt of the State House in Accra to mark the first National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving. The event was attended by notable figures, including President John Dramani Mahama and Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson.
According to Ghana News Agency, President Mahama emphasized the importance of unity and positive communication, stating, "Let us speak words heal and not words that harm." He highlighted that the peace enjoyed in the nation is not solely a result of political actions but also the outcome of collective prayers and the faith of its believers. President Mahama also stressed the importance of religious tolerance, describing it as a "precious gift we must protect."
Cardinal Turkson shared a message of responsibility and transformation, urging attendees to recognize that the "transformation of this land depends on us." He called for the nation to embody virtues such as courage, honesty, discipline, sacrifice, and compassion, which he believes are true measures of a nation's greatness.
The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving was proposed by President Mahama in February 2025 to coincide with Ghana's Republic Day and Senior Citizens Day on July 1.
