Importers and Exporters Association Urges Government to Expedite AGOA Renewal Talks with USA

Accra: The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has urged the government to expedite discussions with the United States regarding the renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). The call was made by Mr. Samson Asaki Awingobit during the 2025 Customer Service Week Celebration at the Tema Port.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Awingobit highlighted that since AGOA's expiration, Ghanaian exporters face a 15 percent tariff on goods exported to the US, a measure implemented during President Trump's administration. Despite President John Dramani Mahama's announcement that his government is negotiating with the US to address these tariffs and renew AGOA, exporters continue to bear the tariff burden.

Mr. Awingobit expressed concerns about the slow progress, noting that many importers and exporters have reported paying the 15 percent tariff. He emphasized the potential revenue loss for Ghana, as shipments returning to the US could leave without carrying Ghanaian exports, impacting the country's hard currency reserves.

He further explained the importance of export revenue for the economy and acknowledged efforts to increase exports to the Chinese market, which currently offers zero tariffs. However, he stressed that the US remains a significant market for Ghanaian exports and urged the government to expedite negotiations to prevent future economic challenges.
