Houthi Fighters Vacate UN Compound in Sana’a After Brief Occupation

Sana'a: Fighters from the Houthi militia in Yemen have left the United Nations compound in the capital Sana'a, according to the UN. The departure follows their brief occupation of the facility, which raised concerns over the safety of international and national staff working there.

According to Ghana News Agency, all fifteen UN international staff are now free to move inside the UN compound in Sana'a and have reestablished contact with their respective UN entities and families. The statement from the UN confirmed that the staff are safe following the incident.

The UN also stated that the five national staff who had been detained since October 18 within the same UN compound have been released. This development brings relief to the staff and their families after several days of confinement.

Members of the Houthi militia had entered the compound on Saturday, escalating tensions in the region. Yemen has been embroiled in a power struggle since 2014 between government forces, supported by a Saudi Arabia-led alliance, and the Iran-linked Houthi rebels. The Houthis control significant areas in the north, including the capital Sana'a, making the conflict a complex and ongoing issue.
