ACCRA: The Greater Accra Regional Peace Council and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) have urged security agencies to take decisive action against those involved in post-election violence and vandalism following the 2024 general election. The organizations emphasized that strict measures would deter future incidents and help maintain peace across the nation.According to Ghana News Agency, reports have emerged detailing attacks and vandalism on state institutions such as the Ghana Gas Company at Airport, Tema Harbour, and the Passport Office at the Ministry. These acts, allegedly perpetrated by a group of youths, occurred after the declaration of election results. The Greater Accra Regional Peace Council and the NCCE made their appeals during a sensitization event focused on preventing violent extremism and terrorism among youth in the Odododiodioo Constituency.Mr. Mawuli Agbenu, Greater Accra Regional Director of NCCE, expressed significant concern regarding the situation. He condemned th e unlawful attempts to take over state institutions and urged Ghanaians to respect due process to ensure a peaceful transition of power. Mr. Agbenu acknowledged that some actions were politically motivated but emphasized that retaliation is not the appropriate response. He supported the president-elect's call for law enforcement to address these incidents and treat the perpetrators as criminals.The sensitization event, organized by the National Peace Council with support from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), sought to raise awareness about the ongoing threat of violent extremism to Ghana's peace and security. Mr. Agbenu highlighted that violent extremism remains a significant security threat and encouraged citizens to be vigilant and engaged in their communities to thwart such dangers.Communities identified as potential hotspots for extremism and radicalization, including James Town, Ashaiman, Nima, and Mamobi, are hosting the event. Mr. Enoch Attoh Okai, Executive Secretary of the Greater Accra Regional Peace Council, described the post-election violence as 'unfortunate' and labeled those involved as 'thugs' who should face legal consequences. He stressed the importance of community resilience to detect early warning signs and swiftly respond to violent extremism, urging citizens to remain vigilant as Ghana transitions from the recent elections and works to prevent any exploitation of security weaknesses.
