Accra: The Government has rescheduled a meeting with the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to July 10, 2025, following an unsuccessful meeting today. The decision comes after the demands of the GRNMA were converted into monetary terms for further discussion.
According to Ghana News Agency, the meeting initially planned for June 26 was postponed due to the absence of some key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Health, and Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. This delay follows an earlier agreement made on June 12, during a meeting at Parliament House, where stakeholders decided to reconvene in two weeks to assess the financial impact of the nurses' demands.
Key government officials present at the June 12 meeting included Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Minister of Health, and Mr. Mahama Ayariga, Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament. Officials from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and Ministry of Finance also attended the meeting. Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, Chairperson of Parliament's Health Committee, expressed Parliament's commitment to advocating for improved conditions for nurses and midwives, acknowledging the GRNMA's cooperation.
The GRNMA had initiated a strike on June 2, 2025, to urge the government to honor the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed in May 2024 and set for implementation from July 1, 2024. The association demanded payment of eight percent of non-basic allowances, along with uniform, fuel, research, and book allowances, among other welfare conditions.
On June 13, 2025, the GRNMA suspended their strike, warning of resumption if the government failed to address their demands. The strike had severely impacted healthcare services nationwide, leading to the closure of many public health facilities and worsening the conditions of numerous patients.
