Accra: The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has initiated a two-week workshop aimed at creating a comprehensive fire safety curriculum for basic schools across the country. This initiative marks a significant step towards integrating fire safety education into the national school curriculum, targeting both lower and upper primary pupils.
According to Ghana News Agency, the workshop is a collaborative effort involving the Ghana Education Service and Ulster University from the United Kingdom. The primary goal of this initiative is to address the increasing need for early fire safety awareness among young students, thereby fostering a fire-conscious culture in future generations.
Mrs. Daniella Mawusi Ntow-Sarpong, the Acting Chief Fire Officer of GNFS, highlighted at the pilot phase of the Fire Safety Education Programme that this initiative aligns with the Government's vision to enhance the GNFS's capacity and ensure that fire safety becomes a collective responsibility. She emphasized the importance of empowering young individuals to safeguard themselves and their communities through structured fire education.
Mrs. Ntow-Sarpong urged participants, both local and international, to contribute their expertise and actively participate in crafting a practical and inclusive curriculum. She stressed the need for a well-designed document with a sense of shared ownership to ensure successful implementation.
She also called for the creation of an actionable content framework, supportive materials for teachers, and feedback mechanisms to ensure the program's effectiveness. Furthermore, she appealed to the media to raise public awareness about the significance of fire safety education.
Dr. Nigel McConnel, a lecturer in Human Behaviour in Fire at Ulster University, stated that the program has the potential to significantly impact the lives of children and communities in Ghana by providing essential fire prevention and response skills.
The workshop brings together fire safety experts, educators, and international partners to collaborate on refining the program framework and ensuring its successful delivery to Ghanaian children. This collective effort aims to achieve meaningful outcomes in fire safety education across the nation.
