GNA Reporter Honoured For Maternal Health Excellence

Accra: Ms. Linda Naa Deide Aryeetey, Chief Reporter at the Ghana News Agency, has been honoured for excellence in maternal health reporting by the National Population Council (NPC) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The award, presented during World Population Day celebrations in Accra, recognised her outstanding contributions to journalism focused on maternal health in Ghana.

According to Ghana News Agency, Ms. Angelina Kodua Nyanor, Executive Director of the National Population Council, praised her for the depth and dedication of her reporting, noting its impact in highlighting challenges confronting women and the healthcare sector nationwide. 'Her storytelling and persistent advocacy on issues relating to women exemplify journalistic excellence and profound commitment to raising awareness of maternal health issues,' she said.

The ceremony underscored the role of her reporting in influencing public discourse and contributing to the development of policy frameworks related to maternal health. Ms. Nyanor, describing her work as 'a catalyst for progress,' emphasised that such high-quality journalism contributed meaningfully to the advancement of society.

Ghana's maternal mortality rate has declined over recent decades but remains a concern, with 234 deaths per 100,000 live births recorded in 2023. Though below the Sub-Saharan African average, the figure underscores the need for continued improvement. Ms. Aryeetey's reporting has consistently illuminated systemic challenges in maternal healthcare and contributed to policy efforts aimed at reducing mortality rates.

This year's World Population Day focused on maternal health, family planning, and women's reproductive rights. The NPC and UNFPA reaffirmed their commitment to supporting initiatives that promote population awareness and enhance healthcare outcomes for women and children nationwide.
