GloMeF Unhappy About Fake News, Calls for Ethical Journalism

Sunyani: The Global Media Foundation (GloMeF), a media advocacy Non-Governmental Organisation, has expressed concerns about the widespread of fake news by some traditional and social media outlets. A statement issued and signed by Mr Raphael Ahenu, the Chief Executive Officer of GloMeF and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), highlighted the rising spread of misinformation by reputable television and radio stations.

According to Ghana News Agency, the statement noted that the proliferation of misinformation, often driven by political interests, undermined public trust in the media. It expressed astonishment that in an age where fact-checking tools are accessible, some media organizations continue to prioritize sensationalism over truth. The statement further indicated that while reckless political statements are not the primary blame, the media is accountable for failing to verify facts before publishing.

The statement emphasized that the disregard for accuracy erodes journalistic credibility and weakens democratic institutions. It called on traditional media outlets to recommit to ethical reporting and rigorous verification processes. The statement stressed that fact verification must never be compromised for speed or political expediency, urging the press to serve as a beacon of truth rather than an amplifier of lies.

GloMeF is a leading NGO dedicated to promoting media professionalism, transparency, and accountability. Through advocacy, training, and research, GloMeF works to strengthen democratic governance and empower journalists to uphold the highest ethical standards.
