Accra: The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting journalists and promoting their welfare. Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the GJA, emphasized that the Association would pursue recent cases of assault on journalists to their logical conclusion and continue to condemn all forms of violence against media practitioners. He made these remarks during a visit to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to express appreciation to the staff for renewing their mandate.
According to Ghana News Agency, the GJA recently issued an ultimatum to the Ghana Police Service to address reported attacks on journalists. These incidents included those involving reporters from the Multimedia Group and GHOne TV during the Ablekuma North election re-run. Additionally, JoyNews reporter Carlos Calony reported being assaulted by military personnel during a demolition exercise at Spintex, Accra. Mr. Dwumfour indicated that the Association would announce its next course of action once the ultimatum expired.
Mr. Dwumfour highlighted that violence against journalists during a democratic process fundamentally undermines the credibility of that process. He noted that it hinders free expression, reduces transparency, and sets a dangerous precedent for future elections. He reiterated the necessity for respect and protection for journalists and emphasized the responsibilities of the new leadership, calling for unity and support from members.
The newly elected GJA executives, including Mrs. Bertha Badu-Agyei, Mr. Dominic Hlordzi, Mr. Mustapha Suleiman, and Mr. Zadok Kwame Gyesi, were sworn in on July 11, 2025. They have pledged to consolidate past gains and work towards a more robust, ethical, professional, and independent media that contributes meaningfully to good governance and national development. The team is scheduled to visit other media houses in the coming weeks.
