Accra: The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has arrested 2,241 foreign nationals involved in begging on the streets of Accra in the early hours of Friday, May 16, 2025. The operation, driven by intelligence, led to the apprehension of 961 males and 1,280 females, with children comprising the majority at 1,332.
According to Ghana News Agency, the operation aimed to repatriate undocumented foreign nationals humanely. The initiative also targets disrupting criminal networks that facilitate their activities in areas such as Sabon Zongo, Nima, Abossey Okai, and Obetsebi Roundabout.
A statement issued in Accra, signed by Mr. M. Amoako-Atta, Assistant Commissioner of Immigration and Head of Public Affairs, highlighted that the suspects are currently undergoing necessary procedures, including security and medical screening at the National Headquarters in Accra. The Service has assured all stakeholders and the public that the detainees will be treated with the utmost professionalism and respect for their human rights.
