Ghana’s Waste Management Sector Seeks Sustainable Funding Models

Accra: The Jospong Group of Companies, which includes Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a prominent waste management company in Ghana, has underscored the necessity for enhanced funding and support for waste management services in the country. Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, the Founder and Chief Executive Chair of the Jospong Group of Companies, stressed the importance of timely payments from government agencies to ensure the sustainability of waste management services.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Agyepong made these remarks on Wednesday during a visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources to the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP). ACARP, located on a 160-acre site in Accra, is the first state-of-the-art waste sorting and composting facility in West Africa. It applies an integrated approach to managing Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in Accra and surrounding areas. The facility processes 600 metric tons daily and produces organic compost for agriculture, alongside recyclable materials like plastics, paper, and metal scraps.

The Committee’s visit aimed to evaluate current waste management practices and identify potential improvements. Dr. Agyepong presented Jospong’s innovative infrastructure, which includes 36 treatment plants, five wastewater plants, and plastic transfer stations. He pointed out challenges such as timely government payments, better wages for sanitation workers, equipment maintenance, and support for worker development.

Discussions also touched on international cooperation and knowledge sharing, with ambassadors from various countries showing interest in Ghana’s waste management strategies. Dr. Agyepong emphasized the collective responsibility in addressing these challenges.

The Committee committed to developing a comprehensive and sustainable waste management strategy in Ghana, focusing on workforce support, infrastructure enhancement, and promoting international collaboration. Mr. John Oti Bless, the Committee Chairperson, affirmed their dedication to transforming waste management practices in Ghana.
