Accra: Ghana is ready to deepen its dialogue with the European Union on structured labour migration, President John Dramani Mahama has said. He emphasized that with shortages in sectors such as healthcare, construction, and agriculture in the EU, Ghana offers a pool of skilled professionals to meet this demand. President Mahama highlighted the importance of collaboration on mutual recognition of qualifications and fair labour standards to establish a framework that aligns Ghana's potential with Europe's labour needs. His remarks were made at the opening of the Ghana-EU Partnership Dialogue in Accra.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Ghana-EU Partnership Dialogue serves as a platform for high-level discussions on key areas of mutual interest, including trade, development cooperation, governance, security, and climate change. The 2025 Ghana-EU Dialogue witnessed the attendance of ambassadors from all 10 EU member countries resident in Accra, along with over 10 Ghanaian Ministers of State.
President Mahama noted the exemplary partnership on migration, governance, and labour mobility. He mentioned the ATUU project, launched in March 2025 with EU support, which underscores their joint effort to make migration safe, humane, and development-oriented. The initiative focuses on enhancing reintegration services, data systems, and community resilience through a national coordinating mechanism and establishing a national referral platform.
The President also stated that the Ghana Labour Export Programme aims to ensure safe and humane labour mobility, preventing risky Sahara and Mediterranean crossings by many youth. Mr. Irchad Razaaly, the EU Ambassador to Ghana, reiterated the shared commitment of the EU and Ghana to effective multilateralism and a rule-based international order. He acknowledged Ghana's constructive role at the UN Security Council and its support for increasing territorial integrity and sovereignty.
In addition, Mr. Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the need to accelerate cooperation on climate action and green growth to meet the ambitious targets of the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He noted that Ghana's initiatives in renewable energy and environmental conservation are bolstered by EU support and called for further EU assistance to unlock climate and green funds, as well as funding from the carbon market, to enhance growth and environmental sustainability.
