Ghana Struggles in the Fight Against Corruption: GACC

Sunyani: Ghana is facing significant challenges in its battle against corruption, as revealed by Mrs. Beauty Emefa Narteh, the Executive Secretary of the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC). She highlighted findings from the Afrobarometer, which indicate a pervasive mistrust among citizens towards public office holders and appointees, coupled with stagnation as shown by the Corruption Perception Index (CPI).

According to Ghana News Agency, Mrs. Narteh shared these insights during a stakeholder's sensitisation forum at Fiapre, near Sunyani. She called on Ghanaians to engage more actively in combating corruption to protect public resources. The forum, organized by GACC with support from Deutsche Gesellschaft fr Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the European Union (EU), and the Swiss government, aimed to enhance public understanding of the Office of the Prosecutor (OSP), the OSP law (Act 959), its mandate, and operational framework.

Participants at the forum included Assembly Members, chiefs and queens, Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), and civil society actors and organizations. Mrs. Narteh emphasized the importance of bridging the gaps in citizens' understanding of the OSP's work and their role in reporting corruption-related offenses. She underscored that corruption impedes progressive growth and sustainable development, urging citizens to actively support the OSP's efforts.

Mrs. Narteh pointed out the persistent inability of successive governments to effectively combat corruption, suggesting a need for a new approach by empowering citizens to hold leaders accountable. She highlighted the lack of political will and commitment from past administrations as factors hindering progress in the anti-corruption fight. Mrs. Nartey urged citizens to apply the same dedication they exhibit during elections to scrutinizing politicians and public office holders to reduce corruption to a minimum.
