Ghana Requires $6 Billion for Comprehensive Flood Control Measures, Says Minister

Accra: Ghana needs an investment of $6 billion to implement comprehensive flood control measures across the country, according to Mr. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, the Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources. The government plans to pursue public-private partnerships, climate financing, and support from development partners to achieve this goal.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Adjei made this announcement while delivering a statement on the floor of Parliament, addressing the perennial flooding challenges and the strategies being put in place to mitigate the issue. He emphasized the government's commitment to building a flood-resilient, climate-smart, and safe environment for all citizens.

The Minister outlined the Ministry's immediate priorities, which include addressing urgent flooding challenges, enhancing existing drainage systems, and improving community readiness. Proposed measures involve emergency desilting and drain cleaning in identified hotspots, enforcing development controls, demolishing structures on waterways, and launching public education campaigns on sanitation and flood risk.

Additionally, the Flood Early Warning System (FEWS) will be activated in collaboration with the Ghana Meteorological and National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana Hydrological Authority to reduce flood risks. Mr. Adjei expressed optimism that with the support of Parliament, stakeholders, and the public, the crisis could be transformed into an opportunity to develop sustainable and inclusive infrastructure while protecting the environment.
