ACCRA: President-elect John Dramani Mahama reaffirmed Ghana's commitment to the one-China policy during a meeting with Chinese Ambassador Tong Defa, emphasizing the historical relationship between the two nations and expressing a desire to enhance bilateral cooperation.According to Ghana News Agency, President-elect Mahama, during the courtesy call by Ambassador Tong Defa in Accra, reiterated Ghana's long-standing adherence to the one-China principle, a diplomatic stance recognizing the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China, with Taiwan as part of its territory. Mahama assured that his incoming administration would continue to support this policy and maintain the foreign relations established by previous administrations.The President-elect highlighted Ghana's historical ties with China, noting that it was the first Sub-Saharan African country to establish diplomatic relations with China under the leadership of Ghana's first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah. He acknowle dged that the relationship experienced challenges during periods of political instability in Ghana but emphasized the recent decades of robust cooperation.Mahama expressed his intent to resume close collaboration with China, citing the need for economic recovery and stability in Ghana. He mentioned ongoing projects with Sino-Hydro and expressed hope to engage further with China on technical cooperation, the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), and the Belt and Road Initiative. The President-elect emphasized the importance of working closely with international partners like China to address Ghana's economic challenges, including debt, currency stabilization, and inflation.Ambassador Tong Defa congratulated Mahama on his electoral victory and conveyed China's eagerness to enhance its partnership with Ghana, reflecting mutual interest in strengthening bilateral ties in the coming years.
