Berekum: Ghana Medical Relief (GMR), a non-profit humanitarian organization, has successfully registered 2,360 residents in the Berekum Municipality of the Bono Region onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) during its 2025 medical outreach.
According to Ghana News Agency, the five-day outreach, held at the Berekum Holy Family Hospital, provided medical services to over 10,000 individuals, including Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and vulnerable groups. The event also facilitated NHIS renewals for clients with expired memberships, ensuring continued access to healthcare services.
GMR, which is registered both in Ghana and the United States, collaborated with the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Holy Family Hospital, and the Berekum Citizens Association. This collaboration enabled the provision of free medical services in various specialties such as ophthalmology, gynecology, obstetrics, pediatrics, psychiatry, dentistry, ENT care, and surgeries for fibroids and hernia.
Dr. Samuel Kwapong Owusu, the Founder of GMR, described the outreach in Berekum as the most successful initiative since the organization commenced its activities in 2018 in various regions including Asiakwa, Anomabo, Atibie, Agogo, and Tamale. He expressed gratitude towards volunteers and partners for their contributions and reaffirmed GMR's commitment to providing free healthcare services 'one village or district at a time.'
He further emphasized that GMR's efforts are closely aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 3, which seeks to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all by 2030.
Beneficiaries expressed their appreciation for the initiative. Auntie Maggy from Seikwa praised the effort, while Mr. Felix Kyere, another beneficiary, appealed for wheelchair support to improve mobility.
