Ghana Journalists Association Advocates for Unrestricted Access to Election Collation Centres.

Accra: The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has committed to ensuring journalists have unrestricted access to election collation centres on Election Day. This assurance comes after reaching an agreement with the Electoral Commission (EC) to promote transparency and uphold the right to information.According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the GJA, acknowledged the EC's concerns about media coverage at constituency and regional collation centres. However, he emphasized that restricting access could hinder access to vital election information. These remarks were made during a training session on election reporting, organized by the GJA in collaboration with the EC in Oyarifa, near Accra.Concerns had been raised by media practitioners regarding the EC's decision to select specific media houses for accreditation at the collation centres. The EC responded by stating that it was working with the GJA and the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association to develop a solution that w ould be agreeable to all parties involved.Mr. Dwumfour reiterated the GJA's commitment to advocating for unrestricted access for journalists while also suggesting the implementation of measures to prevent interference with EC officials' work at the centres. He assured that the GJA is dedicated to ensuring access for all journalists.The GJA President also emphasized the importance of journalists prioritizing their safety during election coverage and avoiding situations that could endanger them. He warned against attacks on journalists and encouraged those with grievances to seek civil remedies.Dr. Serebour Quaicoo, Head of Training at the Electoral Commission, advised journalists to focus on accurate reporting and avoid spreading misinformation. He urged media practitioners to verify information with the Commission before publishing to prevent the dissemination of false information.
