Accra: Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the Acting Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has urged regional directors of health services to assume ownership of projects implemented by development partners to ensure their sustainability and continuity. This call was made during a conference organized by the Ministry of Health in Accra, marking the conclusion of the Maternal Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) project.According to Ghana News Agency, the MNCH project, funded by the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH), aimed to reduce maternal, newborn, and child mortalities in the Volta and Oti regions over a ten-year period. It focused on strengthening health systems, remodeling facilities, and providing essential health infrastructure and medical equipment. Prof Akoriyea highlighted that these efforts led to significant reductions in maternal and neonatal deaths in several districts within these regions.Dr. Hafiz Adam Taher, the Director of Technical Coordination at the Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of KOFIH's support in achieving the government's goal of a healthy population. He acknowledged the project's impact on improving health indicators for mothers, children, and newborns. Dr. Taher also expressed the government's commitment to continued collaboration with KOFIH and the Korean Government.Dr. Robert Adatsi, Deputy Volta Regional Director of Health, noted the project's success in reducing maternal and neonatal deaths and improving health infrastructure in the region. He mentioned that the interventions had resolved equipment and logistics issues and enhanced community participation in service delivery.Additionally, the project achieved over 95 percent immunization coverage for all antigens in the Oti Region, protecting children from vaccine-preventable diseases. Mr. Bomin Yang, the Country Director of KOFIH Ghana, attributed the project's success to continued teamwork with the health sector, resulting in healthier families and stronger communities.
