Ghana Celebrates AU Decentralisation and Local Development Day with Focus on Inclusive Governance

Accra: Ghana has joined fellow African nations to commemorate this year's African Union (AU) Decentralisation and Local Development Day, emphasizing the need for inclusive governance and equitable development across all communities.According to Ghana News Agency, this year's theme, 'Building Resilient Communities through Inclusive Decentralisation and Equitable Development,' was highlighted in a statement released by the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCC). The statement, shared on Monday, was signed by Dr. Gameli Kewuribe Hoedoafia, Executive Secretary, who called on government agencies, development partners, civil society organisations, traditional authorities, and citizens to collaborate in building resilient and prosperous Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).The 2025 AU Decentralisation and Local Development Day provides a platform for African countries to exchange innovations and address structural inequalities, aligning with the AU's Agenda 2063 v ision for equitable and just societies. This day serves as a reminder of the vital role decentralisation plays in promoting people-centred local governance.The statement acknowledged the contributions of local communities in strengthening national unity. Over the past three decades, Ghana's decentralisation programme has brought governance closer to citizens, enhancing public services and empowering communities to have a more significant voice in development decisions. However, the IMCC noted that further efforts are necessary to ensure equal opportunities across the country.The IMCC stated, '.we must be honest: our journey is far from complete. Too many communities still wait for the same opportunities others enjoy. Too many voices remain unheard.' President John Dramani Mahama reaffirmed the government's commitment to deepening decentralisation, emphasizing that local government is central to national transformation.The forthcoming National Decentralisation Policy and Strategy (NDPS) 2026-2030, as out lined by the IMCC, aims to enhance citizen participation, strengthen local institutions, and promote partnerships to deliver tangible improvements in people's lives. The IMCC extended its appreciation to decentralised institutions, local authorities, and community leaders nationwide, urging unity of purpose in shaping Ghana's future through stronger, more inclusive communities.
