Accra: The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) has officially welcomed four new organisations as partners, strengthening its network and advocacy efforts. The new partners include the Stroke Association Support Network (SASNET), Integrated Dignity and Economic Advancement (IDEA - Ghana), Ghana Association of Persons with Little Stature (GAP-LIS), and the Association of Parents and Caregivers of Persons with Disabilities in Ghana.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Joseph Atsu Homadzi, President of the GFD, inaugurated these organisations during a ceremony, highlighting the federation's dedication to supporting minority and under-developed groups advocating for the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities. He emphasized that partnering with GFD would amplify the voices of these organisations.
Mr. Homadzi also mentioned that GFD has secured support from the European Union to enhance the disability movement in Ghana. This partnership involves the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations, the Mental Health Society of Ghana, and the Africa Disability Institute working on a three-year project. The project's goal is to strengthen the capacities of 16 organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) at national and regional levels across 32 districts.
A significant focus of the project is to mobilise minority disability groups, including persons with deaf blindness, cured lepers, and little people, into structured Organisations of Persons with Disabilities, thereby fostering their affiliation with GFD. Mrs. Rita Kyeremaa Kusi, Executive Director of the GFD, encouraged the new organisations to formally apply for full membership in the federation.
